The simple search script was written to allow people to set up a search of their site, so that users can enter keywords and find all documents matching those keywords. It was written to be simple, so there are not many options. When the search returns pages, it returns them in no real order, and they are referenced with the <title> tag of that page. This package is a customization for Speedsoft of Matt's Script Archive Simple Search.

Test it out on our Test Simple Search. This is installed with all of the default options.

There are three files included in the Search Script package. Below is a brief summary of them:

search.txt - Useful installation instructions.
search.pl - The Perl script which does the searching.
search.html - A sample HTML Search Page.

Auto Installation

Make sure you are on the same server as your web site:

User Info

Enter your username and password (same as your FTP and email)

Virtual Hosting Accounts

Virtual Hosting accounts, enter your domain name here in the form "yourdomain.com".
Domain Name:

Install Location

Enter the directories for installing the scripts and the html pages. Defaults are in your cgi-bin directory for the scripts and your home directory for the HTML pages. If you don't know what to enter here, leave them blank.

Script Directory:
cgi-bin//search.pl

HTML Directory:
your_root//search.html

Simple Search Options

These are options for configuring the script. Click on the link for each option to read about what it does. All of the options are defaulted to the most popular settings. If you don't understand what an option does, don't worry about it. Leave it set to the default setting.

Base Directory: This is defaulted to the directory you specified above as your HTML Directory. You can edit the search.pl file later if you want to change this.

Base URL: This is defaulted to the directory you specified above as your HTML Directory. You can edit the search.pl file later if you want to change this.

Files/Directories to Search: Please edit this to your needs. Enclose each search parameter in single quotes and separate each parameter with a comma.

Title of Your Home Page:

Your Home Page URL: This is automatically configured.

Search Page URL: This is automatically configured.
